Yassir Arafat understood the political power of high birth rates. The Palestinian population increased sevenfold in one generation from 450,000 in 1967 to 3.3 million in 2002. The wombs of Palestinian women, Arafat said, were the “secret weapon” in his cause. The Israeli government is very much aware of Palestinian demographics.
Population projections over the long term can be wrong. But for Britain, over the short term, whatever way you do the numbers, they all point in one direction: Britain will be a majority Muslim state by the year 2050.

Researchers in  Connecticut have unearthed in a old farming community a 19th century mikveh that has totally changed view of Jewish history in the United States.
In addition to the rarity of finding a mikveh in the United States dating back approximately 120  years, the University of Connecticut researchers were astonished to see that the mikveh was more similar those in ancient Israel rather than in America.

Arab countries not EU recognize: Hezbollah is a terrorist organization

On June 4, the European Union once again decided that it would decline to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, and would refrain from adding it to the EU’s list of proscribed terrorist groups. The decision came in the wake of a determination by the Bulgarian authorities that Hezbollah was behind last year’s deadly terrorist attack on Israeli citizens in the Black Sea resort town of Burgas.  

European citizens now have decided to take action and have organized an online petition  calling on EU institutions to designate Hezbollah as a terror group.

One wonders why an effort by European citizens is needed before their political leaders become convinced that Hezbollah belongs to the class of terrorist organizations.

People in a supposedly democratic Turkey are reluctant to air their grievances even in public surveys out of fear their government might take revenge on them. During the past few years, people in Turkey have been saying that they are petrified to speak to others, write things, or talk freely on the telephone for fear they will be arrested. At present, Turkey has more journalists in jail than any other country.

The appointments of Susan Rice as national security adviser and Samantha Power as the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. made it clear in which direction U.S. President Barack Obama's administration is heading in the international arena. However, after four years of ideals clashing with reality, second-term presidents tend to give up ideological purism and instead adopt realistic policy goals that recognize the limits along the path to fulfilling their original vision. In Obama's case, however, the opposite is taking place.

Hezbollah named “enemy of Arabs and Muslims”, poll

Over two-thirds of participants in a four-day online survey that ended Tuesday believe that the Iranian backed Hezbollah militant group is the new enemy of Arabs and Muslims.
The one-question survey by Aljazeera.net asked: “Do you think Hezbollah has turned out to be an enemy of Arabs and Muslims?”
A total of 453,943 respondents (or 72.8%) said yes, compared to 169,605 (or 27.2%) who said no.
Almost half of the respondents (49.18%) were from Saudi Arabia. The others were from Lebanon, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Turkey, Jordan, the UAE, Palestine, Morocco, the UK, Germany, France, the U.S., Canada and Australia.
The survey that closed Tuesday got underway last Saturday, when Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, whose militiamen are openly fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army, told supporters Assad’s war “is ours, and I promise you victory.”

Polls don’t mean that much unless there are political parties and leaders willing to implement them. The Netherlands may represent the first time that the counterjihad stars have aligned in a single country. Wilders’ popularity is rising and tolerance for Islamic terror is declining.

More than three quarters of the Dutch (77 percent) believe that Islam is no enrichment for our country. More than two-thirds – 68 percent – say that there is enough Islam in the Netherlands. It is striking that a majority of voters from all political parties (from PVV to VVD, CDA, D66, PvdA, SP and 50plus) share this view.

Jewish Rabbi Attacked in Germany by… Muslim Mob

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The men in jackboots and swastika armbands have been swapped out for men in beards and toting Korans.

A group of youths attacked a rabbi on Sunday evening in Offenbach, a city near Franfurt. Six to eight “Mediterranean looking“ youths attacked the 39-year-old Rabbi Mendel Gurewitz.
Police spokesman Rudi Neu, in southeast Hesse state where Offenbach is located, said a criminal complaint was filed and there was probable cause to investigate for an anti-Semitic hate crime, bodily injury and harassment.
The alleged attack took place in a shopping center passage. The authorities are reviewing video cameras from the shopping area for footage of the event.

On Israel's President's Conference

I would, in retaliation, host Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan "Apartheid Weeks." Stephen Hawking has, apparently, no issues speaking in China and Iran, two countries with appalling human rights records. No one speaks about BDS of Saudi Arabia, where the list of human rights violations is endless. Where were their voices? Or Pakistan, with religious minorities facing persecution and violence against women? No one asked me to cancel my trip to Pakistan.

Recently I received an email from "a Palestinian in Vancouver," in Canada, asking me to boycott Israel's annual Presidential Conference, "Facing Tomorrow," soon in Jerusalem, where I have been invited to speak.
The request for my boycott citied as reasons Israel's human rights violations and mentioned that as Stephen Hawking boycotted the conference, perhaps I should, as well.

Forty-five years ago, on June 6, 1968, New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy died of gunshot wounds. His assassination, coming five years after his brother Jack’s and two months after Martin Luther King’s, traumatized America. Amid the tumultuous 1960s, with youth rioting, crime soaring, blacks protesting, the Vietnam War souring, and these young, visionary leaders dying, Americans wondered: “is ours a sick society?” While America then needed reforming, the soul-searching around Robert Kennedy’s assassination was unmerited. The truth -- which most overlooked then -- was that this Kennedy assassination was the first major act of Palestinian terrorism targeting the United States.

Can a big-mouthed person be the US ambassador to the UN? Can someone with a track record of controversial quotes be forgiven for not always being at the top of her game?
It occurred to me that amid all the talk about Samantha Power’s nomination to succeed Susan Rice as the next UN ambassador this basic question is the real issue. It isn’t necessarily Power’s views that will be scrutinized at the hearings and by the public; it is her temper and manner. Power called Hillary Clinton a “monster”, Power spoke about “crimes committed, sponsored, or permitted by the United States”, she said about Secretary of State John Kerry that “he must have thought that having got shrapnel in his ass out there bought him some credibility. It didn’t”.

Oh, and she is “a hater of Israel”. That’s not a Power quote, of course, it is something that other people – people who obviously dislike Obama’s choice – say about her.

Five church schools in Gaza face closure after Hamas order

Five schools in Gaza – two Catholic and three Christian – face closure if the Hamas government follows through on an order forbidding co-educational institutions, according to the director general of Latin Patriarchate Schools in Palestine and Israel.
Fr Faysal Hijazin said: “This will be a big problem. We hope they will not go through with it, but if they do, we will be in big trouble. We don’t have the space and we don’t have the money to divide our schools.”

On May 16, I had written about plans to establish a new Palestinian Arab city near Jericho, reportedly to be called Nu'aimah, which would house tens of thousands of residents and require the transfer of almost 2,000 dunam (500 acres) of land from the Jordan Valley Regional Council -- which is in area C -- to the PA for the project.

 

At that time, I indicated reports that Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon, on learning about this project, ordered it stopped immediately.  But the stop was until Ya'alon "could formulate a position on the issue."

 

So I conferred upon Ya'alon a "tentative bravo."  "...we'll have to wait to see what position he formulates," I wrote."

 

And now we know what his position is (at least on the record).  He has given the project his go ahead.

And it is this that is absolutely NOT ACCEPTABLE.

We might say that we should not be surprised.  Although this part of the picture is not making it broadly into the media,  my information is that Kerry is leaning hard on the Netanyahu administration regarding concessions to the PA, and this project had the "endorsement" of the secretary of state.  I would say, understanding him as I do, that Ya'alon, left to his own better judgment, would never have given this the go-ahead.  It's likely that he got the word from his boss, Netanyahu, after Kerry had "whispered" in his ear.

 

But I do not shrug and say, "nu, this is the way it is.  This is the political situation."  Not at all.

 

There simply is a time to say "NO," no matter how many words -- tender or threatening -- Kerry may have whispered in Netanyahu's ear.  The first and overriding reason is because this puts 10,000 Arabs in the Jordan Valley. And, you may have noticed, Netanyahu -- who insists that he will never cave on security -- has referred to the Jordan Valley as an area that is important for Israeli security.

 

And then there is the fact that this is, Area C, fully Israeli land under Oslo -- an area on which the Arabs have no business building.  What is happening is they are encroaching on this land in order to put facts on the ground.  And we're going to cooperate with this??? 

 

NOT ACCEPTABLE.  

 

We have a government that is voluntarily giving our land away.

David Alhiani, chairman of the Jordan Valley Regional Council, says this is land that was slated for development by the Council.  What is more, he says that the development of this region by the PA will effectively close off a large part of the Jordan Valley to Israelis.

 

Alhiani's take is different from mine:

 

"The people who are going to be getting this city are criminals who started out by squatting and living in tents, then moved on to makeshift shelters, and finally began illegal construction of homes. Now the government is giving its stamp of approval to this behavior. "The problem has been clear and growing for years, he added, but the Civil Administration chose to ignore it – and is now trying to 'cover its tracks' by officially legalizing the city."

Incensed, he says the Jordan Valley Regional Council is going to fight this.

I hope that you will also be incensed. 

 

Please! Write to Defense Minister Ya'alon immediately and tell him it is wrong to surrender Area C land in the Jordan Valley to the PA.  Tell him that issues of security and Israeli rights to the land are at stake. Ask him to reverse his decision before it is too late. 

 

This is especially important if you are an Israeli citizen (which he should be informed of) -- and I ask you to share this with other Israeli citizens as well.  If you are Likud voter, and disappointed with how the Likud coalition is acting, let him know this, as well.

In my last posting I asked you to contact JNF about the outrage of a fee paid to Bill Clinton for a speech he will give here in connection with Peres's birthday celebration.  Some of you have since written to me to share the response of JNF, which is that it wasn't involved.

 

I will simply say this:  A friend here took the time to investigate the story (thanks Judith!) and what seemed to be the case is that everyone was blaming someone else.  There was no real consistency to the stories.  It did not take long to conclude that it was unlikely that we'll ever know the full story. 

 

Paying Bill Clinton (or his foundation) half-a-million dollars for a speech is obscene in my book no matter who here in Israel is paying.

A follow-up on little Zakkai here:

 

 

Remember Zakkai?  He had four surgeries by the age of two for persistent tumors on his spine.  After all (benign but aggressive) tumor tissue appears to have been removed, it re-emerges.

 

Zakkai just had a new scan of his spine, and his parents write:

 

"Friday's scans indicate that Zakkai's tumor has reared its ugly head again... it sounds like we're heading for some additional interventions.

"...x-rays indicate that the curvature of his spine has gotten worse (in both respects, left/right and front/back).  Accordingly, our orthopedic surgeon wants to discuss options as well..."

After more than two weeks of fighting, the Syrian army -- with considerable assistance from Hezbollah -- has now bested rebel troops in Qusayr, near the border with Lebanon.  The city has been significantly leveled.

 

But with this Syrian army victory comes a major change in the dynamics inside of Syria: Assad is beholden to Hezbollah, which is now not just doing operations against Israel from its Lebanese base (something that Syrians respected), but is also operating in Syria against Muslims and is seen as an occupying force by some. 

 

What is more, Hezbollah's vicious fighting has exacerbated sectarian tensions in the region.  Rebels, who are mostly Sunni, have expressed a particular hate for the Shiite Hezbollah fighters.

“We will not forget what Hassan Nasrallah did,” said Abu Zaid, 40, a fighter from Qusayr. “We will take revenge from him and his organization even after 100 years.”
One activist charged Hezbollah with "placing a burden on the shoulders of generations" of Shiites, similar to the burden borne by Germans after their leaders "committed massacres against the Jews."
Many Sunnis in Lebanon, who had had enormous respect for Hezbollah at one time, now consider that Nasrallah's troops have betrayed them.

Rather than slowing down, the war is widening.  It is disconcerting that CNN, citing the Pentagon, says that US intelligence agencies have identified three Russian amphibious warships in the eastern Mediterranean.  It is believed that they are carrying weapons shipments that might be used to resupply the Syrian regime.

There has also been fierce fighting today at Quneitra, which is the Syrian city closest to the border with Israel -- actually 70 meters from an IDF post.  Old Quneitra is in the Israeli Golan.  Rebels seized the Quneitra Crossing briefly, but then it was retaken by Assad's troops, who took heavy losses in the battle.

Speaking to the Knesset yesterday, Prime Minister Netanyahu delivered a message (in English, a language they both understand) to putative president of the PA, Mahmoud Abbas:  "Give peace a chance."

 

To which I say, "Mr. Prime Minister, give us a break already."

 

Explained Netanyahu:

"We are willing to discuss initiatives that are offers, not dictates,  We are in favor of negotiating without preconditions immediately."

But Abbas has said, "The ball is in Israel's court," referring to the need to freeze building over the Green Line.  (In point of fact, there is no official freeze, but there is one to a large extent de facto.)

And Palestinian Arab negotiator Saeb Erekat declared:

"Of course we want to negotiate. No one benefits from the success of Kerry's efforts more than us...But we want to know the agenda of the talks. We want the Israeli prime minister to utter the word 1967."

So, how long do we keep playing this nonsensical game?

"What happened on Tuesday In Ramallah -- often referred to as the bastion of Palestinian secularism and moderation -- serves as a reminder that radical Islam has found its way to this West Bank city.
"Hundreds of Muslim fundamentalists marched through the streets Tuesday to mark the 92nd anniversary of the fall of the Caliphate.
"The Palestinian Authority, which had in the past cracked down on Hizb-ut-Tahrir [Party of Liberation], the radical organization that led the march, instructed its security forces not to intervene, even as PA spokesmen condemned US Secretary of State John Kerry's efforts to revive peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel.
"Hizb-ut-Tahrir is a radical, Islamist political organization that calls on all Muslims to unify under an Islamic state ruled by Islamic law, Sharia, and a Caliph. The march in Ramallah was organized by members of its Palestinian branch, who, along with their fundamentalist followers, lamented the long-ago decision by the Grand National Assembly in Angora, Turkey, to depose Caliph Abdul Medjid Effendi and abolish the Caliphate."
"...Palestinian Authority officials have not offered an explanation as to why Hizb-ut-Tahrir, whose members are frequently targeted by Palestinian security forces in the West Bank, was given permission to hold a rally in favor of jihad [holy war] against Israel.
"Some Palestinians, however, said that the decision to allow the fundamentalists to hold a rally in Ramallah was aimed at sending a message to Kerry about the challenges and threats facing the Palestinian Authority.
"The Palestinian Authority leadership, according to this theory, is using the Muslim radicals to scare Western donors into continuing, or perhaps increasing, their financial aid to the Palestinian government in the West Bank.
"But at the same time the Palestinian Authority is also shooting itself in the foot. Hizb-ut-Tahrir is an organization that openly despises the Palestinian Authority leaders, dubbing them traitors and collaborators with the enemies of Islam."

So, if there's any good news on the "negotiation" front, it's the fact that I'm starting to read that Kerry is getting weary of the non-existent "process" and may turn his attention to other things.  Mazel tov.  I'd say there's more than enough to keep him busy.

The not-so-good news has to do with some decisions -- official and unofficial -- by the Obama administration.  Please see Shoshana Bryen of the Jewish Policy Center on this.

Bryen refers to the "leak" of top-secret information about specifications for the heretofore-secret US-Israel installation for Israel's Arrow 3 missiles.  She says it probably was not an accidental leak, but rather an attempt to keep Israel in line.

And then there is the new appointment of Samantha Power to be US ambassador to the UN.  A serious matter that has many people greatly disturbed.

"She was prepared in 2002 to put a major American military presence in the West Bank to safeguard Palestinians from presumed Israeli brutality, and she was openly willing to have the United States force its will on Israel."

The Syrian Civil War created a problem for Hamas. Hamas is getting money from Qatar. But it also gets weapons from Iran. Qatar can give Hamas money, but Iran is tops for giving it weapons.

Both Iran and Qatar want Hamas to choose a side. But in the Muslim desert, all alliances are fragile and based on deception and backstabbing. Ideologically Hamas would like to stand by its Muslim Brotherhood brothers, but it also needs weapons that it can only get from Iran. And after enough pressure from Iran and Qatar, Hamas came up with a completely reasonable solution.

The video is a fake. The boy shown there was not "killed" in the incident. But according to France's "official truth," he was "killed." He will therefore be considered "killed" by French political leaders, the French media, and probably, in a few weeks, the French judiciary. In France, no one can question "official truth" without incurring huge risks.

On September 30, 2000, at the beginning of the Palestinian terrorist offensive against Israel called since then the "second intifada," a particularly violent clash took place at the Netzarim junction in the Gaza Strip. As shots were exchanged between Arab militiamen and Israeli soldiers, cameramen from various television channels were nearby, filming news reports. One of these reports quickly spread around the world and became a ubiquitous tool for anti-Israeli Arab propaganda. It showed a young boy huddling against his father, the two unsuccessfully trying to protect themselves from gunfire: the son appeared to have been killed. The commentary accompanying the images was overwhelming. The last words of the voice-over, uttered in a stricken tone, were: "The child is dead".

The mixed Arab-Jewish neighborhood of Agash in Ramle has become the scene of an ugly campaign of harassment. Jews living in the neighborhood have reported several incidents of vandalism as well as verbal harassment from a group of Arab men.

For the past week, major anti-government demonstrations have swept across Turkey. Beginning as a fifty-person protest against the razing of trees in an urban park in Istanbul, protests have spread to over 60 cities and towns, reaching every region of the country.

Chanting “Hukumet Istifa, Tayyip istifa” (‘Government Resign, Tayyip, Resign’), the protestors are demanding that Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan step down after 12 years in power.

Erdogan and his Islamist-oriented AKP (Justice and Development Party), first came to power after winning Turkey’s 2002 national elections.

To counter the political impact of the demonstrations, which continue despite brutal police suppression, the prime minister is appealing to Islamic populism and employing the politics of polarization.

IRS exempts terror front group over tea party

At the same time the Internal Revenue Service delayed or denied requests for tax-exempt status from hundreds of conservative non-profit groups, it was quietly restoring the tax-exempt status of an Islamist front group accused of collaborating with terrorists.

Last year, the politicized agency reinstated the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations’ tax-exempt status despite years of delinquent tax filings. CAIR officials had met with officials inside the White House before the decision was made.

Though Democrat-connected CAIR did not officially endorse Obama, many of its staffers helped turn out the Muslim vote for his re-election. CAIR boasted that its own polling showed more than 85 percent of Muslim-Americans voted for Obama.
In 2011, the IRS stripped the group’s national office of its nonprofit status for failure to file annual tax reports as required by federal law.

I've been criticized by some readers as having "Islam on the brain." It's not a very kind criticism considering the seriousness of the Islamic jihad against them and me and everyone else in the West. Why, my critics ask, don't I devote myself to more important topics such as President Barack Obama's assault on freedom of speech, on his assault on private ownership of guns, on the government's assault on private property, on Obamacare, on Holder's Fast & Furious, and so on?

I don't know where these readers have been, but I've logged in over 500 columns on those and many more subjects on Rule of Reason alone. I think I am well versed in the damage Obama and Company have wrought domestically, never mind the twisted alchemy of their foreign policies, and have written extensively on both phenomena. I've been excoriating Obama ever since he poked his head out of Illinois many years ago in a stage-managed debut at the 2004 Democratic Convention.

The Kirk has committed theological suicide in order to promote political inanities. The former Church of Scotland is defunct; the Church of Latter Day Scots has taken over the premises.

At its recent General Assembly (May 18-24, 2013), the Church of Scotland adopted a pro-Palestinian tract entitled The Inheritance of Abraham? Its Preface admits that a previous version "caused worry and concern in parts of the Jewish Community in Israel and beyond" and offers "clarification." The clarification is mere window-dressing, but that is beside the point. It is rather "parts of the Christian Community in Scotland and beyond" that should be worried and concerned. To judge from the amateurish theological absurdities in this document, which passed through all the relevant levels of the bureaucracy up to the General Assembly, the whole Kirk is adrift. It has abandoned a glorious past for a dubious future.

Attacks on Christian children in Egypt are on the rise.
Earlier this week, a six-year-old Coptic Christian boy, Cyril Yusuf Sa'ad, was abducted and held for ransom. After his family paid the ransom, the Muslim kidnapper, Ahmed Abdel Moneim Abdel-Salam, killed the child and threw his body in the sewer of his house. In the words of the Arabic report, the boy's "family is in tatters after paying 30,000 pounds [$4,300] to the abductor, who still killed the innocent child and threw his body into the toilet of his home, where the body, swollen and moldy, was exhumed."

-Israel's record of compliance with international law is remarkably strong.
In a long series of decisions, the Israeli High Court has ordered the
Israeli government, army, and security services to change policies that, in
the court's view, were in violation of customary international law. The
court has even intervened in actual combat situations.
-Perhaps because Israel's detractors are aware of this reality, they have
undertaken a process of manipulating international law in a way that invents
rules that are
applied only to Israel and not to other states or in other situations.
-Israel's detractors invented a new international legal concept called
"illegal occupation".In an armed conflict, international law clearly
permits military occupation. The UN Security Council has never declared
Israeli occupation to be illegal. U.S. occupation of Iraq after the Second
Gulf War was universally considered a legal act.
-It is often presented manipulatively as a legal axiom that the Green Line
already has the status of a legally binding border. By signing a peace
agreement, Israel and Jordan have now mutually acknowledged the termination
of the Armistice Agreement and its demarcation line. The validity of an
armistice line expires with the expiration of the armistice. Therefore,
formally, there is no longer any legal validity to the Green Line.

“We have to put it on the table and be honest about it. Of course there are Christian extremists and Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu ones. But I am afraid this strain is not the province of a few extremists. It has at its heart a view about religion and about the interaction between religion and politics that is not compatible with pluralistic, liberal, open-minded societies.”
“At the extreme end of the spectrum are terrorists, but the world view goes deeper and wider than it is comfortable for us to admit. So by and large we don’t admit it.”

Right then. Now who made this a problem for the pluralistic, liberal, open-minded UK?
