Israeli-Jordanian team set up first artificial coral reef in the Red Sea

Facing the possible extinction of the breathtaking coral reef which populate the Red Sea shoreline off of Eilat and Aqaba, Israeli and Jordanian marine biologists have implemented a unique new approach to conservation - an artificial reef. The developers hope that the Tamar reef - the largest in the world - will steer divers away from the natural reefs and enable them to recover. In addition the reef provides the researchers with a unique underwater laboratory, enabling them to observe and unravel the development and growth of the unique and complex ecosystem.
