On the importance of San Remo

Yom Haatzmaut (Israel's Independence Day) is celebrated every year by Israelis and Diaspora Jews.  The proclamation of the State of Israel, on May 14, 1948, was indeed an important event, but it pales in comparison to the rebirth of the Nation of Israel on April 25, 1920.

This momentous decision – adopted by the Supreme Council of the Allied Powers at the San Remo [Italy] Conference, and later confirmed in the Mandate for Palestine document, and approved unanimously by the League of Nations – marks:
·      the reconstitution of the Jewish Nation in the Land of Israel where sovereignty is vested in the Jewish people under international law, and

·      the end of the longest colonization period in history, after 1,850 years of dispersion, oppression, and estrangement of the Jews from their ancestral land.
